Paper Craft

Now the summer holidays are upon us I know there are many parents out there desperate to keep their little ones entertained and out of trouble. I also know how many customers we have that are young at heart and would appreciate a little article on the fine art of paper craft.

Making models from paper templates became popular during the Second World War as a result of paper use and production not being heavily regulated and magazines would often print the templates for readers to make themselves. However as plastic became more readily available its popularity died off.

However the pastime was given new life once the internet became popular as it made it increasingly easy to distribute and download templates for printing. It has become so popular that even big companies have taken notice and made their own mini sites offering their creations.

This brings me nicely to my first recommended site which is Canon CREATIVE PARK. Unsurprisingly run by Canon this site hosts a wide variety of models ranging from animal models to toys and festive decorations. These templates can be downloaded in PDF form along with comprehensive instructions and range from simple cubes to some incredibly complex buildings. No matter your skill level you should be able to find something for you here.

Those of you who are looking for something quick and easy to put together may be interested in Cubeecraft. The models here are all based around the same basic template and should be within the skill range of most people. While there are some original creations the real draw of this website to me is the huge range of pop culture inspired models. This website is a real gem for film, videogame and comic geeks who would like to get their hands on their favourite characters in model form.

The last website I would like to make you aware of is PaperCraft Museum,  an archive of papercraft templates of varying difficulty that users can rate and download. In all honesty I would not recommend it to those new to papercraft as many of the models are very complex and require substantial skill and dedication. It is however impressive to look over some of the images as there are some very nice examples on show here. If you are feeling brave some pretty in depth tutorials are available and there is a pretty active community on their forum.

That is it for now I hope you will check out some of these sites. If you do and want to let us know about it or have any other sites you would like to make us aware of please leave your comments below.
